In a recent interview, Melle Mel stated that “There aren’t 10 great MC’s in Hip Hop” along with the surprising “I’m the greatest ever”….When did he become part of anyone’s TOP 5? I did agree with him on saying that L.L. Cool J could be considered one of the greatest of all time, even though he dismissed it by saying L.L. couldn’t compare to Kool G. Rap, Big Daddy Kane, or any other MC in his TOP 5. Don’t get me wrong, Grandmaster Melle Mel was a pioneer, no doubt. He was the first rapper to refer to himself as an ‘MC’. A close friend of Mel’s and member of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, ‘Cowboy’ Keith Wiggins was even credited with coining the term ‘Hip Hop’. But GREATEST EVER? That’s just like saying Oscar Robinson was greater than Kobe. I give respect where respect is due, but Mel kinda sounds like a bitter soul that doesn’t respect the younger generation. What is your take on this?
